If anyone knows anything about me, is that I love different kinds of music. I could listen to Hard Rock, Alternative, Rap, Hip-Hop, Folk, etc… So with that in mind and with countless people telling me how great the album was, I decided to pick up the Denver based, The Lumineers self-titled debut this weekend. This album was released in April of 2012. (Yeah, I know I'm late.)My introduction to The Lumineers stems from their hit single that’s on the airwaves now “Ho Hey”. It’s a great little ditty that uses simple lyrics, simple percussion and a great melody to make a really good single.The album starts off with a short track called “Flowers In Your Hair”. It gives you an introduction to the band and right off the bat you know what you’re getting yourself into. With upbeat strumming, soft story book like lyrics, and the use of boot stomping and hand clapping for as percussion.“Dead Sea” and “Big Parade” brings about a certain “Dylan-isque” quality about it. Nothing wrong about it. “Slow It Down” does just that. It’s one of the slower (if that could be possible on a Folk/Bluegrass album). The other standout track here is “Stubborn Love” with it’s mix of guitar work and percussion, it wins you over with how simple the music sounds. Sometimes simplicity is key.After listing to this album, I can see why the band was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Americana Album at this years Grammy's.I give this album a 4/5.Check out the video for “Ho Hey” below.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvCBSSwgtg4
