ICG on Movies: Silent House

by: Steve (@MisterJackal)Based on the Uruguayan Spanish language horror film, La Casa Muda by Gustavo Hernandez, stars Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) as Sarah, a young woman who finds herself locked in the family's secluded lake house without electricity or contact to the outside world. What works? Elizabeth Olsen! Her performance is very convincing. She ranges from crying, screaming, running, hiding under the bed and just being scared for her life. Another thing that worked, was the cinematography. Silent House is filmed in one continuous shot following around Olsen from beginning to end going in and out of focus around the action. The house takes the cake in this movie because it is CREEPY. Have you ever been in a house that you don't really know by yourself? That's how you feel while your watching this movie. This house is full of closed doors, stairs, dark corners, creaking noises, foot steps and all the things that will scare anyone that has an overly active imagination. The use of lanterns throughout the film also really worked for me because it shows how useless and defenseless you can really be in the dark. What didn't work? Adam Threse (Zodiac) and Eric Sheffer Stevens (Julie & Julia), who play Olsen's father and uncle respectively. They aren't really believable to me and take a little bit away from the movie.Overall, Silent House is a good real-time horror movie that is definitely worth checking out.I rate it a 3.8/5.[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C8z9m97OAU]
